downconverting to make DVD
Posted by Andrew Gilmore on June 20, 2005 at 11:06 pmHow do I downconvert my feature-length sequence so I can burn it to DVD?
I have a Dual 2.7 Ghz and Kona 2 card. This DVD output is not for mastering purposes, only for reference and so the director can review the project on his home dvd player.
Please help me out.
Thanks in advance.

DVDSP3 does this directly if you have it. drop the HD file in the assets and it will downconvert on the fly
( but it does take little while)gary adcock

June 21, 2005 at 12:13 pmThe quick and easy way to do this is to pick up a DVD Recorder from your local Circuit City, Best Buy, etc… then take the Component Feed and RCA audio directly out of the Kona 2 set to downconvert and record to the Disk. I do client approval DVD’s like this all the time and it’s much faster than using iDVD or DVDSP since it works just like a VCR.

June 21, 2005 at 10:18 pmI have a pioneer DVD recorder. It does not have component inputs, but I am going to use my Digibeta deck as a pass-through from Component in to Composite out.
My follow up question to your helpful answers is: what is the most accurate and reliable method for outputting without dropped frames or other errors?

Fast drives. If you have drives that are barely fast enough for the work you’re doing that can cause dropped frames. Fragmented drives can also cause issues. I run the Medea FCR2X (Fibre Channel) for all my HD work here.

June 25, 2005 at 5:24 pmI have a HDcam 23.98 to Kona DVC Pro HD 1080 Final Cut Studio project that I would like to downconvert and out put to the component outputs into my Sony DVD recorder which acepts Y, Pb, Pr inputs. I can’t seem to be able to figure out the settings necessary to play off the timeline into the recorder. There’s downconversion, 3:2 pulldown, anamorphic, 29.97, down resolution, all tried with no success, HD 23.98 to component output 29.97 525. Any help would be most appreciated, thanks, Keith Collea

June 25, 2005 at 5:56 pmYour downconversion is two steps as you mentioned: frame rate conversion (or pulldown) as well as scaling.
In order to do this:
1. Sequence should be set at your native editing settings – 23.98 .
2. In A/V Devices menu, change Playback to 29.97 (1080i). This will achive the frame rate change.
3. In Kona card, change analog output to component and adjust secondary format to desired.I don’t have the card and menus in front of me right now but that’s approximately the steps you need to take.
