Using Kona SD with Decklink Drivers
Posted by Steven Kochones on June 2, 2005 at 9:53 pmIs anyone using an original Kona SD with Blackmagic’s Decklink driver 4.8? Blackmagic says its driver supports the Kona SD under OS 10.3.8. Can someone comment on their real-world experience using this hardware/driver combination? Does it work? Any issues? Do you recommend such a setup?

Yes it works fine. Just make sure you use the right combination of software together, ie:

June 3, 2005 at 6:57 pmQuestion for Luke: what’s the hardware (computer) minimum for running BM driver 4.8 under OS 10.3.8 with the Kona SD? Thanks.

June 4, 2005 at 3:01 amAs far as I can tell (before we switched to K2) everything was great, except for the framebuffer in After Effect that was not playing real time.
have a nice day,

You will need a dual-processor PowerMac G4/800 or faster with 512 MB RAM or more. More is better and 1 GB would be preferable. More details are provided at https://www.blackmagic-design.com/support/detail.asp?techID=60. Skip down to the section entitled Mac OS X 10.3 Panther configuration. This should cover most of what you need to know. It would also be a good idea to take a glance at this technical note https://www.blackmagic-design.com/support/detail.asp?techID=89. It discusses current software compatibility with Panther.

Thanks for letting us know how the drivers are going. That is good news.

That is correct and I’m still hoping we can do something to fix that with the Kona SD. The drivers seem to be working fine for everything except playing the After Effects framebuffer in real time. However it would be nice to make this work too.

June 6, 2005 at 7:50 pmI’ve been trying the Decklink driver for the past few days on my Kona SD. I work only in 24p. Since I switched to the Decklink driver I found that my Kona will now only play 24p in the non-24p 10 bit setup. If I use the 10bit 23.98 setup then the images really go crazy when playing and on one occassion actually crashed my machine. The odd thing is that 24p (23.976) sequences play fine in the NTSC 10bit setup. Is this a sign of something wrong with the card or a compatability issue?
I switched to the Decklink driver to see if it fixed the automatic pulldown detection for my telecined tapes. I could never get that to work with the normal Kona drivers. The card never seems to sync with the A frame. I’m getting tired of doing 10 second tests at the head of each tape to see which frame the Kona ‘thinks’ the A frame starts on. It thinks it’s different on each tape. Even the same tape if there is a restart between sessions.
Anyone else dealt with this issue?Michael Hodges

June 10, 2005 at 6:31 amHi Michael,
I’m not quite sure what’s causing this but would suggest that you repost the question in the https://www.creativecow.net/forum/view_posts.php?forumid=124” target=_blank>DeckLink Cow forum. That’s where Kona SD questions are handled with the DeckLink drivers so hopefully you will receive some answers there and we might get a better idea when some of our engineers return from WWDC.
