AVID LVD drive replacement
Posted by Ant Sprung on May 19, 2005 at 5:12 pmHello all.
Excuse my ignorance but I would like to replace the 36GB seagate drive in my AVID drive enclosure [rs36/160 LVD 5th generation] with a larger drive – 73GB or even 146GB. Does anyone know if that is possible?
Also, is anyone using non-AVID drives with their AVID – I would like to buy some extra capacity for my AVID MC9000XL but hate the high cost of AVID LVD drives.
Thanks very much in advance.

May 19, 2005 at 11:33 pmThere is no such thing as an AVID drive. AVID does not make drives -they make a box.
AVID used to use Seagate SCSI drives, and now use Hitachi/IBM SCSI drives.
They work just fine, and you can just get anybodys drive enclosure to run these drives in. Make sure you turn off drive filtering in settings/media creation, or settings/general.HOW DARE YOU ASK an AVID question on this AJA forum.

May 20, 2005 at 3:48 amI guess owning a particular product equals honesty? Or are you saying COW AJA is more honest than COW Avid?
There is less censorship in Avid owned forum than Apple’s..02

May 20, 2005 at 9:15 amThanks for the information Bob – I guess I’m just a daring kind of guy. We don’t usually shout at each other on this side of the pond though, especially if you’re replying to someone you don’t know. This is a community right?
My mistake for asking the wrong forum – but at the same time I love a dare.
Anyone (including angry Bob) from the Avid or AJA (what is AJA?) forum like to comment on a good drive/enclosure with helpfull specs like LVD/seek time – you know, tech’ type stuff.
Fred – thanks for making me laugh 🙂 I take your point about Avid bull – I’ve smelt a lot of it over the years. I assume you meant the organisation and not the people that operate them.
I’m off to ask about a DVD sudio pro isssue in the Sonic forum now – wish me luck!
All the best.

May 20, 2005 at 12:18 pmRon Amborn at Maxx Digital in California is well known for selling “third party” AVID drives in StorCase enclosures. He ships all over the world.

May 20, 2005 at 12:40 pmHey Bob
Why don’t you tell him about Huge arrays? They do work with Avid, and are much more affordable.
