Kona2 “capture now” max duration
I would like to know, using a non-controlled source, how long I can capture.
What we’re doing is capturing a show which is 1hour 15minutes in length from our switcher.
SDI and Analog audio (don’t ask). We currently have a Cinewave RT Pro system on a G5 dual 2.0
with 3gig ram and 1TB of fibre Raid Drive from Apple. It crashes after 20 minutes.We want to capture it, spit it out to DVD w/template to make master DVD for production asap.
Recording to tape THEN digitizing is safest, yet does not get us there fast enough.
Any thoughts, questions, answers?Thanks in advance.

Technically you can capture as long as your drives have media. Crashing after 20 minutes is not necessarily a problem with CineWave, it’s more likely something in your overall setup. Are you running all the correct driver / firmware combinations with the OS you’re running?
I’ve captured 20 minutes with no problems here, though I don’t do ‘uncontrollable device’ all that much. I saw this past weekend that Fox is using FCP to cut all the “going to break” music videos during their NASCAR coverage (in HD) so I’m assuming that they’re using the uncontrollable device thing to capture on the fly with no issues.
Do you have a local VAR with a Kona 2 where you can do a test capture as a test?

haven’t tried an hour 15 minute capture with Kona2, but I’ve gone upwards of 45 minutes no problem.
i have an alternative.
This is a costly solution, but it works:

I’m not sure what kind of “template” you want for your menu, but this thing has menu templates built in. Also, through the use of a windows pc, allows you to customize those templates. You can record straight to DVD, or to disk (built in), or to both.

Yesterday I captured 90 minutes from DVD NTSC (component) to NTSC DV codec with the Kona LS, and I was surprised by how easy it was. No delay at the end of capture. Captured to a Lacie D2 1TB FW800 drive. Played it out again straight afterwards after trimming in FCP. Flawless.
Our Cinewave system exhibits bad delays at the end of “capture now” over about 5 minutes. Short captures are fine, but you can forget capturing now of anything over 20 minutes.
Definitely a driver issue, and card-specific variations exist on using Capture Now.
