  • Cannot reliably insert frame accurately to an D-Beta A500 Need help.

    G5 Dual 2.0 5 gigs RAM
Kona 2 1.1 drivers and newest firmware
    XServe via Fiber

I’ve been wrestling with the most frustrating problem. I have a 90 minute show broken into segments. All segments begin on a frame :00 timecode. When editing to tape (K2 and the D-Beta are locked to house BB.) it is completely hit or miss whether I’m a frame early or a frame late or dead on. Furthermore, and this is where it gets really weird if I happen to get it right on the :00’s and that segment plays out and the next segment begins (also positioned on the playhead at an :00 frame) that segment may or may not begin on the :00 frame. Well, that seems impossible.

Is the TC drifting? How can the program drift? By the way, not surprisingly, if I lay off the whole 90 minute program, the later segments are now drifting by 3 or four frames despite the beginning of the program beginning dead on at 1:00:00:00.

The playback offset is 0. The tape was blacked and striped using FCP’s stripe feature, although I’ve had the problem when striped manually. When setting in points via the edit to tape function it always reports back correctly and the pre-roll is set to 5:00 although I’ve tried 7:00 with no improvements. All timecode windows everywhere report the correct timecode. The inserts are just terribly inconsistent.

    Anybody out there seem this?

    Thanks. David

I reported a problem a while back similar to yours, but on HD outputs. Even with the new driver today, I still seem to have sync issues with HD outputs. Here is the response from the query I placed originally:

    >>>The only way to make frame accurate insert edits on Kona HD is to go back to the 2.3b7 BM drivers from over a year ago.
If you have to make inserts with your current setup, try resetting the Device Control and you will be able to make 1 edit that doesn’t repeat the first frame. (lousy work around)
Ever since the 4 series of drivers came out I’ve lost the ability to do frame accurate inserts or assembles in 1080P 23.976 to D5 or HDCam. I have told both BM and AJA about this problem, the exact same problem exsists on the Decklink HD.
Maybe when AJA comes out with thier own drivers this will be fixed.<<< Although the BM driver is gone, try the reset. Also, try Panther Cache Cleaner, medium cleaning on all selections - User, System, etc. this solved a couple output problems for me. try also outputting from the Viewer panel instead of the Canvas, and have the deck in Input Video rather than Ref. Try striping by inputting blk into the DB's composite input, set the deck to Internal TC generation with LTC/VITC on Auto, and set the TC start preset in the menu/jog dial. I trust the DB's internal TC generator more than anyone else's. MAke sure you also set NDF or DF as appropriate. Let us know what happens. I will be doing a frame accracy test with the latest K2 driver soon and will report. steve covello double wide post

Try to use the internal black & silence generators to stripe a tape.
