Preference for LTO6 tape brand?
Is there any compelling reason to use one tape brand over another for LTO6?
HP, Sony, IBM, Fuji ,Quantum, Maxell, IBM and TDK are all priced with $1 or $2 of each other. Is there any reason to go with one specifically?

It all goes by preference at this point. Personally I think quantum is the best to use and easiest. As well as I can get you better pricing if you’d like to talk.

HP’s and FujiFilm’s have proven to be the most reliable and least destructive (head and transport guide wear) for “Green” media environments like M&E where tapes are often used once and then shelved.
These are the only brands that we recommend to our customers. We sell the HP branded tapes.

Unfortunately, that’s not true. There are major differences between the processes used by the different manufacturers. After testing wear and retentivity of the major brands for over 3 years of heavy use, we (and HP) have determined that the FujiFilm and the formulation called for by HP on their tapes are the best.

You should see the number of 5 and 6 engineering sample drives that we ruined in the testing :). But, better us that you guys!

New to this. In the days of tape based camcorders and players it was highly recommended to have a head cleaning once per year. Does the same apply to LTO drives?

The drive will prompt you (via the light on the drive) when it needs to be cleaned, but we do it a couple of times a year. The cleaning system is smart on the LTO drives and if it’s not needed, the process simply ejects the tape.
