  LTO/LTFS Solution For OS X

  I’m in the process of upgrading my old gas-fired Mac Pro 3,1 to the Mac Pro iTube, also adding a lot more storage with a Pegasus2 array.

  I’m looking for advice for LTO back up solutions for this setup.

  Which LTO drive?
  Which LTO SW?
  Which TB2 to LTO interface? (SAS I assume)

  I’m not even new to LTO, so I don’t even know where to start, let alone finish.

  Warning – vendor input below 🙂 –

  If you are hard-set on LTFS, any vendor’s solution will work (as well as LTFS works). I prefer the HP solutions because HP at least acknowledges that Mac computers exist and the real people use them. With the other guys, you are kind of on your own in OS X-land.

  If, however, you are just looking for LTO support for your OS X world that happens to include LTFS support in addition to a more traditional and reliable backup / archival solution, you might take a look at our ArGest solutions.

  Hi Kevin,

  Just to keep you informed, you can also look into Storage DNA Evolution which is a Mac based LTO LTFS based archiving software.

  I don’t know what is your archive size .. if you want to use a library the please look into Spectra Logic T50e an entry model with spectra media on it using spectra’s own media lets you utilize MLM its a tool basically keeps a track record of the tapes like health checkup,mount& unmount counts,format counts etc.

  I would like to highlight some of the key features of Storage DNA.
  It uses open LTFS to store the data without using any proprietary wrapper.
  SDNA keeps you metadata also on open XML so you have full access to both your data and metadata that means tomorrow if you don’t have SDNA still you will able to retrieve your contents back just by using LTFS.
