Activity Forums Storage & Archiving New RAID workflow question

  • New RAID workflow question

The 6 TB RAID array that stores all our video footage, FCP and After Effects projects is nearing capacity. We purchased two identical 8 TB units for similar storage needs while keeping the current arrays and their footage as they are. The new arrays are paired together just like the previous ones: one as a main storage with another backing it up.
We now have these workflow issues:
    1. Do we start anew with storing all files and projects on the new RAIDs? If so, we may have to access footage from both old and new drives to build projects.
    2. Do we try and “merge” the two drives together to make one larger array with the same name? If so, what are the pitfalls? Our IT guy who would perform the change is a little paranoid about this option after a previous bad experience doing the same thing.
    3. Is there a third or fourth option?
Above all, we want to be able to retrieve files and timelines in Final Cut Pro and After Effects.

Third option – get an LTO-5 or LTO-6 tape solution and archive the old, unused data to tape and clean off the spinning storage rather than further expanding it. With the capacity points and speed to recovery provided by LTO drives, there’s a much better solution than simply throwing more disks at it.
