  • What are the best external hard drives to use with an iMac?

Posted by Howie Young on July 16, 2012 at 11:46 pm

When using an iMac and FCP X what is a good brand external hard drive to use for video storage and back-up?

    Any thoughts on the following:

    G-Tech
    LaCie
    SeaGate Go Flex
    Western Digital

    Thanks!

I’d pick G-tech from that list every time.

    Hi Andy,

Thanks for responding to my post.

Why would you select G-Tech? What makes this a good brand?

In my opinion, there is only one reason to pick G-Tech – and that is because they use Hitachi disk drives (G-Tech is now owned by Hitachi). OF course, Western Digital now owns G-Tech, and there are no more Hitachi drives – they are actually HGST drives –

what a crazy world we live in. Is there any business more volatile than the electronics business ?

Yep, that’s my reason. Hitachi GST still seems to have its own label and SKUs despite the WD corporate ownership.

What’s your opinion of the Thunderbolt drives?

Take a look at Glyph, they have a very low failure rate, they are assembled in the US and have built in power supplies. They also offer a three-year warranty with advanced replacement and data recovery.

    Hi Chris,

    I’ve never heard of Glyph.

Do you personally use these drives? If yes, what is your recommendation?
