  RAID 0 and JBOD

  Hello Guys,

  I’m new to RAID systems, and wanted to buy a Lacie 2Big thunderbolt. Here’s my concern: I’ve heard that if you use RAID 0, if the Lacie dies you cannot recover your files unless you use the exact same Lacie model to recreate the RAID, you cannot just extract the working drive and recover your data. Is this true?

  Is using JBOD a solution for this problem?

  Hi Tom,

  The LaCie you talk about has either raid0 or raid1 level. It has 2 HD’s. With Raid0 you have a maximum of speed, but no redundancy. In case one of the drives fail, your data is gone – forever, no recovery. In case of raid 1 you loose half of the space and a lot of speed, but you have redundancy.
  Generally for us a raid with no redundancy is no option. A Raid with raid level 1 is too slow.
  I can’t recommend this raid. You should go for a raid with level 5 or 6, which means redundancy in combination with speed. For example LaCie 5big.
