  Hobbyist editor/vdeographer with low-end RAID question

  My less-than-2-year-old IMac is dropping frames when I try to multicam edit with FCP 7.
  It has trouble processing footage from 4 Canon HG20 cameras (about 2 hours worth from each).
  Yeah, I know, shoulda bought a bigger boat.
  My research leads me look into a RAID 0 purely to hold my footage while I edit, not for anything else (storage, etc.)
  The footage would be backed up elsewhere before I begin to edit.
  Is it as simple as using, say, 2 G-Technology – G-DRIVE mobile with Thunderbolt 1TB External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drives, made into a RAID 0 with Disk Utility?
  Would this provide enough disk speed?
  Thanks for any advice you can provide.
  If you need any specs on my machine, I am happy to provide them when I get home tonight.

  Hi Michael,

  Raid0 is no option. With multicam editing you need speed and reliability.
  Is your mac equipped with thunderbolt? There are a lot of affordable 4-8 bay raids on the market. Which Os system do you use?

  My OS is OSX 10.8.5
  3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
  I have 2 Thunderbolt ports

  Do you have any recommendations for Raid Arrays?
  I am, as stated, an amateur, so, as much as I fantasize about it, I cannot really justify spending large bucks on a high-end system.

  It depends on what you want to use the raid for? there are multiple types of raids. Give us a call at Maxx Digital and I am more than happy to give you some advice on selecting one that fits you wihtout spending big bucks.
