Replacement for Samsung HD204UI 2TB 54000
Hi, the above drive just went in a 4 drive raid array. I am wondering what I should replace it with as they are not easily available in the UK. I just want to replace one drive.

You absolutely, positively must replace with a like drive or your array will simply never work reliably. But, you’re in luck, now you can replace all your 5400rpm drives with the 7200rpm drives you should have been using all along.

Actually I will most likely ditch the RAID5 array and go TO LTO4.

LTO 4 is outdated technology.
It’s 80 bucks. Are you telling me that you don’t have $320 for four new 80 dollar drives to allow your business to keep running ?

Thanks for that. Is this the same drive https://www.dabs.com/products/toshiba-2tb-sata-6gb-s-64mb-7200rpm-3-5–hard-drive-9126.html?q=2TB%207200&src=16. They are actually £60 in the UK which is not bad. how good/reliable are they.
I know LOT4 is a bit outdated but LOT5 is way beyond what I can afford. I will be archiving 32GB SD cards so 800GB at £20/tape is extremely attractive and I can puck up the drives for under £200. Is there any other long term tape storage you can recommend.

PS one of my issues with my RAID5 set-up is I use this one https://uk.startech.com/HDD/Enclosures/35in-4-Drive-eSATA-USB-FireWire-External-SATA-RAID-Enclosure~S354UFER which is only USB2/eSATA. I do use the eSATA but it is a real pain because if I turn it off I have to reboot the computer to get it to turn on again (Think this is expected with my motherboard). I have noticed there are USB3-eSATA adapters, was wondering if these would work for me?

In the US, I see that B&H Photo which is very popular here is selling LTO 6 tapes for 40 US dollars. I think that https://www.span.com
is a discount reseller in the UK, but I am not sure.LTO 4 is over. LTO 5 is on it’s way out, but is still a popular format for delivery and archive. Of course, LTO 6 is the current technology. MLogic makes a wonderful thunderbolt to LTO 6 solution for $3600 US. You have two choices – drives, and LTO. That’s it.
A lot of drives today are reliable for backup, but you should certainly put the labor into spinning them up once in a while.So exactly who said that this business was inexpensive to be in ?

I am a sole trader and long term archive is not my business, its just something I would like to do. Spending a few hundred is all I can afford, which is why I was looking at old LTO.
I just brought 4 2TB Toshiba’s, that will have to do me for now.

nothing wrong with backing up to inexpensive SATA drives – most of my clients do exactly that ! Just spin them up once in a while, and you will be ok.
