FAST portable storage for Multiple HD camera stream capture?
Hi,
I’m looking for advice on fast portable external storage (or series of storage devices), capable of capturing multiple HD camera streams simultaneously.
Our department produces a series of talk shows, and I’d like to capture 5+ HD camera streams simultaneously from switcher, and build an Avid multi-cam project on the fly, while recording all ISO camera feeds and audio to external storage in the file structure of our choice. We shoot with a standard flypack with a video controller, server op, and TD/director.
Quadrus Ingest Machine is able to do this in multiple standard codecs (https://quadrus.tv/products/ingestmachine). Quadrus has recommended an HP Z820 with a couple AJA Corvid 24 cards and fast external storage. Though I’ve not yet demo’d the software, Ingest Machine evidently builds the Avid multi-cam project when connected to any switcher with tally output.
The idea is to skip the time consuming back up of various HDD’s from KiPro rack units or Pix260’s for each camera. This would eliminate the need for a data wrangler and also save AE time when AMA linking and consolidating files to ISIS.
Traditionally we shuttle HDD’s from set to the post facility twice a day (lunch and end of day) our storage needs to be portable.
If we record 5 streams in DNxHD 120 (@25fps) with 8 channels of 24 bit, 48k audio, it comes to just under 80MB/s.
What external storage would handle this without dropping frames?
I’m concerned that I have only one point of failure with the ISO feeds going through the HP tower, though I see the sexy benefit to capturing this way. I know other weekly talk + sports programs do this regularly to Avid servers, though it’s hardly portable and pretty costly.
Can a standard OWC 4 bay, RAID 5 Elite Pro Qx2 handle this capture, or would I need something like a Cineraid? https://www.cineraid.com/products/Areca_ARC-5040.htm I already own some of the OWC Qx2 RAIDs. Are there solutions with small SSD raids?
Thanks in advance,
Burk
