mounting western digital drive outside housing
sorry if this is the wrong forum but I figured you guys understand drives. I was trying to mount my western digital 2tb mybook outside of its housing so i could take advantage of the sata speeds. (the housing only has 800 ports).
i am using a voyager dock and a lacie sata to thunderbolt connection. the drive pops up but cannot be read. i put it back into the housing and it works fine.
how come it wont read outside of the housing?

Hi Stephen,
if you want a professional advice: Don’t fiddle around with drives in a fixed housing – it does no good. You are lucky you didn’t loose your drive.
Anyway – there are a lot of housings on the market, where you can swop harddrives with different connections (faster than USB).Cheers

We work with a USB 3.0 Icybox and Hitachi Deskstars. If you want eSata connectivity look for Raidsonic housings.

I’ve had nothing but trouble with the “toaster” style enclosures. I’d suggest getting one with a trayless slot.

I also have some Icybox style enclosures and they work great as long as you’re not swapping drives a lot. THey are by far the most affordable option. There are many companies using the same hardware. THis is identical:
