Areca ARC-1882X with two RAID 6 enclosures?
Hello! My first post here.
I have an Areca ARC-1882X SAS controller (latest firmware installed) feeding a SansDigital SANS DIGITAL EliteSTOR ES316X6+BS 16 bay RAID 6 array. I recently purchased a Sans Digital EliteSTOR ES208X6+B 8 bay RAID 6 enclosure to use for backing up projects.
When I connect the new enclosure to the Areca (both boxes directly connected to the Areca), it only detects the 16 bay enclosure on startup, but when launching ARCHTTP manager, it sees both enclosures. The problem in that Windows 7 only sees the first drive connected.
I then connected the new box to the SAS expander out port on the first box, but get the same results.
Can I get this set-up to work, or will I need a second controller card to use both boxes at the same time?

It should see both boxes. Are the drives initialized in the 2nd box (added to the first RAID set or set up as a 2nd one)? Windows won’t see the new drives unless you do that and if you set up a 2nd RAID set, you will also need to create a volume for it in disk management in Windows. If you add them to the existing set, you will need to “expand a volume” in Windows.

The second box is set up as a separate RAID array, and the volume was set up in Windows. If I turn off the original box, Windows sees the new box just fine. It just won’t see both boxes at once.thanks

This is weird, and isn’t normal behavior. I’d call Areca support on this, and start drilling down on troubleshooting checklist, i.e. put just one drive in each enclosure, in various bays, see if they can be seen by the system at the same time, try a different HBA or RAID controller.

you see, Ken, next time you will hire Alex directly (or someone like him – these are called VALUE ADDED RESELLERS) instead of buying from a mail order discount house, and realize that nothing is working. It’s not fun when nothing works, is it ?
Go into your MRAID Utility (you did load this in from the Areca website, didn’t you ?) and select Volume Function, and change the SCSI ID to a different # – you will see that it shows:
0, 0, 0
make the second chassis 0, 0, 1
and you will be able to mount both drives (I never use Windows, but this is in the MRAID utility, not in Win7).Bob Zelin

I used to see that option all the time, regardless of whether it was a thread I posted on our not. As a “Cow Leader” I would think I’d still have that option, apparently not.
