    Hello,

Currently in my MacPro 3,1 I have a G-Tech 4-Port, PCIe x4 RAID Controller. I plan on using a G-Speed Es array with it and configuring to RAID 5.

I used to have installed a Sonnet Tempo SATA Pro 6Gb 4-Port card…but apparently it didn’t have a RAID controller, which is why I switched to the currently installed G-Tech RAID controller as mentioned above.

The Tempo boasts 6Gb/s, while the G-Tech can only handle 3Gb/s.

So here are my two questions:

    1. Is there a 4-port eSATA card that is BOTH a RAID controller AND can handle 6Gb/s? Any suggestions? I was looking at either the HighPoint RocketRAID 644 4-Port External SATA 6Gb/s PCI-E 2.0 x4 RAID HBA or the HighPoint RocketRAID 640 4-Port SATA 6Gb/s PCI-E 2.0 x4 RAID HBA

I am not familiar with either of these cards nor the company in general. Is this what I’m looking for? Part of my skepticism is because they both list for under $100 while both the Temp and G-Tech are about $300.

    2. If I were to find an applicable card that can be both RAID configurable and 6Gb/s, but I’m transferring data to a G-Speed eS array which supposedly handles 3Gb/s, then the 3Gb/s speed is the fastest it’s going to get, correct? It seems obvious and it probably is, I’m just trying to wrap my head around this concept.

I just don’t know why there are 6Gb/s cards and only 3Gb/s RAID systems. Am I missing something? Please educate me and pardon my ignorance.

    Thanks!

…and apparently HighPoint only has web support and that web support is only available IF you own one of their products.

    Areca ARC-1213-4x/1223-8x – $500/600. There’re others – this is the best.

    Thanks a bunch Alex.

Is there a RAID array system that you’re aware of that can handle 6Gb/s?

    Appreciate it!

    Paul,

    Our EB800MS 8 bay (with Areca 1223X) now has a 6Gb/s backplane 1000MB/s in RAID 5
(the previous version had a 3Gb/s backplane.

    https://www.proavio.com/index.php/products/desktop/eb800ms

Or our 16 bay IS316JS with expansion (with Areca 1882X), supports 6Gb/s at 1600MB/s RAID 5

    https://www.proavio.com/index.php/products/post-production/is316js

Either product can be purchased through Alex at DV411 as well.
