each client connected to an AVID ISIS with a single 1GbE Ethernet cable will get about 100MB/sec. IF you use two Ethernet cables, you get about 150 MB/sec per client. This is NOT link aggregation. AVID has their own little trick to making this happen (and I do not know that trick, but I do know that it is not LACP).
The entire single chassis (engine) is 350 MB/sec. Your configuration is 3 RAID 5 groups, each with a hot spare, and then drive 16 is an additional hot spare. You gang engines together to get more bandwidth. When I first found out about this, I was surprised how slow this was compared to anyone else’s 16 bay chassis, but this is the configuration that AVID has decided on, making security of your media more important than speed and performance.
If you exceed the bandwidth of anyones drive array (I don’t care if it’s an AVID, a single FW drive, or one of the fancy 16 bays you see here on Creative Cow), you will get stuttering of playback, and “drop frame” errors (audio or video underrun errors).
AVID ISIS 5000 is designed for DNxHD145 (20MB/sec) or DNxHD220 (30MB/sec). It can support a single 10Gb Ethernet card in each AVID ISIS 5000 Chassis as a direct connect from chassis to client computer, using Myricom 10GbE cards. The current connection to your Dell Force10 S25 switch is a Myricom 10GbE card that fans out to 24 or 40 clients (depending on the size of the switch). If you want direct connect 10G, this is another Myricom 10GbE card that goes into the ISIS 5000 engine, that connects with a fibre cable to the client computer, that also has a Myricom card in it.
