  What is a SAN workflow?

  I’m sure this will sound like kind of a dumb question to some of you, but I’ve only been in the business 2.5 years and the only stupid question is the one you don’t ask, right?

  What is a SAN workflow? I’ve found from Google that a SAN is a Storage Area Network, or a network where everyone at a single company or station saves their video-related work and materials to. Is this correct? How is this different from working on a LAN?

  My other question is: How do I know if the place where I used to work used a SAN or just a server? We could save our work and materials to a central server and work off of it, but it was never referred to as a SAN, probably because not everyone using it was in video-related departments.

  short answer… a LAN setup uses a server that shares a disk over network protocol (SMB/AFP) but that volume is owned by the server which controls it.

  A SAN is a volume that is mounted to multiple users directly, not via a server’s share… but a server class machine typically governs the metadata, so clients have a metadata and a data connection to the SAN.
