Aberdeen Xsan Setups?
Hey everybody,
Kinda going for a shot in the dark, but has anyone ever heard of using Aberdeen XDAS Fibre Units to create a volume on a Xsan?
I’m currently weighing the pros and cons of having these units and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with them.

Two years ago I actually talked to an Aberdeen Sales guy a few times when we were researching shared video storage. They claimed to have done quite a few video specific installations at some high-profile companies and their website (at the time) even had a video shared storage page.
But when it came down to me asking them critical questions about system setup, networking etc….they had some confusing and sometimes inaccurate responses…most of which seemed steeped in IT misinformation rather than in an understanding of the demands of digital video.
Ultimately, the two companies we found that knew what they were talking about technically were Apace and EditShare. We chose Apace because they gave us emails and phone numbers of numerous end-users…all of which raved about the system. EditShare wouldn’t or couldn’t supply us with names of real-users to contact…nor would any other company that we talked to (there were many) .
Another storage company that claims to do video specific installations is Winchester, but our experience with them was exactly like the one with Aberdeen. Maybe they’ve both improved in the two years since, but I’d stick with companies that make proven systems for video specific purposes.

This could be “old info” so I apologize to Aberdeen in advance if I am giving misleading information here – but not that long ago, when you would call Aberdeen, the “little details” that they never discussed was that they didn’t have any MAC drivers for their drive arrays – kind of important for what all of us do for a living – wouldn’t you say ? IT would be great if Aberdeen would write back and say – “that is totally incorrect, we absolutely have MAC drivers for our host cards, and it works great with the MAC platform”.
With that said (and again, I apologize to Aberdeeen if I am wrong) – Active Storage is a GREAT MAC oriented product, and perfect for XSAN enviornments. I have learned recently, that when I speak to new storage companies, the first thing I ask now is “do you guys have a MAC Pro at your company to test these units with ?”. If the answer is NO, then I am not interested in speaking to these companies, because as bugs develop, these companies CANNOT address or find these problems. “Gee, it should work with the MAC” is not an answer.
A host adaptor company that I used to work with was VERY slow in updating MAC drivers, and I got screwed every time with my clients.
We are not in the insurance business – you cannot escape the MAC OS-X platform.Bob Zelin
