Hey guys:
been checkin gout SAN storage solutions and came upon the new name, (at least to me anyway). What are your thought on this product:

I spoke too soon. This is a Fiber channel array. Would I buy this product in a heartbeat instead of a Promise VTrak – in a heartbeat. Just use the ATTO 42ES with this product.

Proavio is Enhance Technology in southern California. Their stuff works fine, but use their product with an ATTO or Areca card. They often recommend the Highpoint products, but I have had terrible luck with this product line.

Thanks bob, i looked @ the specs and they seemed fine but B&H has a 12 TB version for $6800, and a comparable option from Dulce is 11K but that is with a controller card.
Thanks for the recommendationthis SHOULD be able to do 2k files(single stream), although the most we will be doing is uncompressed 1080/24P or 30P HD or prores HQ, but want the option just in case i decide to try to get a job that needs it.

yes, it should be able to do a single stream of 2K. I just want to stress that you are ALWAYS under the mercy of the host controller card used by these systems. Everyone always thinks that if they get a Dulce, ProAvio, etc. they are getting that manufacturers host controller card – THEY ARE NOT – they are getting an OEM version of a card from a company like ATTO, Areca, or Highpoint (or LSI, etc.).
You get a crappy card, you are doing nothing !Bob Zelin

in this biz, when u try to save a lil cash by buying something cheaper, you always get screwed.I always buy the best i can afford, and in the computing world, u better get yourself an ATTO for FC.

yea… but if you want a bit more reliability in your unit, say, if you actually need to make a layoff to tape on a deadline and you need to have your unit at 100% stability, try the following:

I’m not questioning these guys products since I don’t know a thing about them. But I WILL question why so many former Apple executives are founding members and are part of their executive management?
Are they affiliated with Apple? Did all these dudes get laid-off and decide to try to cash-in on their Apple affiliation? A little odd to see an “independent” company with a cool logo and so many former Apple executives running a “new” storage company.
If their products work…fabulous. But I’d certainly be suspect until I saw them in action. They’re obviously VERY new. Their support forum has a whopping 7 days worth of activity and less than 100 views.

Geez Chris, skeptical are we?
I can tell you that Active Storage is for real. We’ve just installed six of their
X-RAIDS as part of our X-SAN system upgrade. These boxes are co-existing quite
nicely within a large population of much older Apple drives.Yes, the brains behind this company are the same people that created the original Apple x-raids. When
Apple decided to get out of the storage business, these folks (Active) arranged to bring to market what
would have been the next version of X-RAID.Sure, they’re a new company, but I’ve never been afraid to be the first one to jump into the pool. Come on in, the water’s fine!
While Active storage may be new to you, I’ve been tracking their progress for quite some time. They had a strong showing at MacWorld in January, an even better display at NAB in April, and compared to the other options out there, I find them to be very forward thinking in their approach.
Did you see their iPhone app for system monitoring? Very cool.

Why yes…I AM skeptical. Like I said at the top of the first post. I wasn’t questioning their products since I don’t know much about them. But the guy who plugged them lists in his profile that he’s a support person for their products. Whether he works for them or does it as part of a forum…I’m not sure…I just know that a lot of people try to use these forums as thinly veiled marketing pitches for products, which has always irked me.
More power to them if they’re putting out a quality product that makes using shared storage easier for folks. I just prefer to read unaffiliated, unbiased opinions about products from end-users (like yourself).
I spent months researching the solutions we chose, and the vast majority of people out there selling shared video editing solutions are selling snake oil. Most don’t understand what video professionals want or need, and they also sell products that don’t do what they say they’ll do once they get into the demanding environments of broadcast production.
Heck, some of them don’t work out of the box moving a couple of streams of SD video! Anyway…it just seemed like an odd post when the original question was looking for opinions about the Proavio line of products.

That’s clearly not the case here. I’ve voted with our pocketbook, and wouldn’t have done so if I wasn’t
comfortable with either the specs or the people behind the product.Jordan’s been a Cow forum host for years, dispensing tons of free advice. Give him a break. He’s entitled to a plug every now and then.
