  • How much to charge for storage?

Posted by Santiago Pilgrim on March 11, 2015 at 10:04 am

    Hi all,

I will be charging a client for storing their files from a previous project I have produced for them

    It’s approximately 340gb altogether.

For sending them the file I am just going to charge for a 500gb hard drive and postage.

But, they also want an option for me to store the files.

I have no idea what the standard rate for this is, I’m guessing a monthly fee per GB?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Santiago.

you sell them the drive. They must pay for the drive 100%.
Then you keep it on your shelf.
If they say “that is crazy – we are not paying for the drive” – then you tell them that you cannot keep their media.

    Thanks, Bob.

That’s fine, I was going to charge them for the drive.

But surely I should also be charging them for keeping the hard drive on my shelf?

That’s where I thought a monthly fee would come in – maybe not per GB as that just means a bigger hard drive which they would have already paid for, but a monthly fee for storing the hard drive I think makes sense… just not sure how much is reasonable.

    Hi Santiago,

If you want to alienate your customer, then by all means charge them to put the drive they paid for on your shelf, so that they can pay you to do more editing with the footage on the drive later. Seriously, unless you have an office the size of Saul Goodman’s, I would not bring up storage with the customer, seems petty.
