  ALWAYS FORMAT – Never simply trash files

  One additional tidbit of information that might be critical…After recording on your drive you will probably want to transfer them to another storage medium. I recently made the mistake of simply trashing the files on the SSD after they were transferred.

  This colossal mistake resulted in not being able to record on the full capacity of the drive for some reason. It was like the files that I trashed were still there. I discovered this after attempting to duplicate the problem. Formatting the drive eliminated the problem entirely. Onward!

  Anyone else discover this?

  I do always urge that SSD’s be reformatted after use. Typically this has been found to be the best practice.

  You probably did this though when you trashed the files, did you Empty Trash? If not the files are still technically on the SSD. It also may be an issue of TRIM. In SSD’s, TRIM software is needed to let the computer know that files that have been emptied from the trash can be treated as garbage and written over such as would be the case in a normal HD. I’m unsure if the BMCC software has a TRIM software enabled.

  I did not EMPTY THE TRASH. So that is pretty interesting. We were recording a bunch of lengthy interviews. After 46 minutes the camera screen said SSD FULL. I thought I had 4 hours of recording time available on a 480 GB drive. I had no warning either. So that is a “gotcha” that all BMCC users should be aware of. Thanks for the explanation. Onward!

  Yes. One always has to format and ,make sure to eject from a Mac (else it will mess up without the eject). If using a Windows machine one can not eject for some reason but can use the files and render them before having to reformat. Basically SSD full or not, one should format on a Mac every time one is going to shoot. Exfat is best.

  Why do you feel EXFAT is best? First time I have heard that. Is that for compatibiity between different operating systems?
