I’m transcoding a bunch of 4K prores 422 footage for a large project I’m working on and would like to find the best codec to suit these requirements.

    – Similar to Avid DnxHD or Apple ProRes in terms of compression to quality
    – Able to export in 2.5K (2560×1440) rather than just 4K or 1080. (2.5K is the resolution I need for the transcodes)
    – Able to export direct from Adobe CC software on a PC
    – Compatible with multichannel audio (Although I’m pretty sure that’s handled by the file container and not the video codec, I usually go with Quicktime .MOV for this)

    Thoughts?

    Potential Solution

I’ve discovered that Avid now supplies an Avid DnxHR format that works with 4K. When I tried custom setting the resolution to 2560×1440 with DnxHD it only outputted 1080, but I tried it with DnxHR and it worked, so it seems as long as I don’t surpass 4K I can custom set the resolution in DnxHR. The only issue is the file size is still rather large. It is however almost exactly half the size of the ProRes files I got out of camera. Unless someone comes out with a better solution I’ll go with this.
