  • Why does H264 always have an .mp4 extension?

Posted by Danielle Warren on August 12, 2012 at 7:35 pm

    Hi all,
I’m fairly new to Media Encoder, but am liking it over compressor for most things, especially as it is much faster.

But one thing I’ve noticed is that if I choose the format to be H264, the extension of the resulting file is always .mp4 rather than .mov like you’d get if you exported straight from FCP with the H264 quicktime conversion setting.

Why is this and how can I change it? Sometimes mp4 is great, and sometimes I want .mov but using the h246 codec. I know there must be a way to have both, I’m just not seeing it.

    Any help appreciated as always!

Choose Quicktime as the format and H.264 as the codec within Quicktime. Then you’ll have the .mov file.

Thank you Robert! I knew it was something simple, I just couldn’t see it. Really appreciate it!
