  • My effect vanished from my timeline – can’t figure out how to get it back

Posted by Scott Campbell on October 7, 2019 at 6:24 pm

In my ignorance, I pushed the wrong button…but I don’t know what wrong button I pushed…or how to reverse my mistake. I am new to FCP X, but I’ve managed to successfully animate (keyframe) a mask in my timeline. All of a sudden, the mask effect disappeared. My original footage remains, but the overlayed mask is no longer there. Any hints on how I can try to get it back? Thanks.
(P.S. the problem isn’t that I mistakenly unchecked the effects box – that box is still checked – thanks!)

If I’m reading this correctly, you just want to toggle the mask guides, yes? If so, clicking the dashed oval will toggle visibility.

Thank you so much. I never even noticed that button before! Success!
Sometimes it’s the simplest things. Thanks for your quick reply!

    Hey Scott,

    Glad I could help!

In the example above, opening the correction with the mask will allow additional adjustments outside the mask as well (or only outside, as needed), and the same visibility toggle resides here, too:
