Relink mov to R3D
Posted by Bret Williams on July 16, 2018 at 4:15 pmI have a project that has already be roughed together with .mov proxy files created during the shoot. I need to relink to the R3D files. Each folder contains the .mov and multiple 4gig R3D files.
I’ve tried the method of simply relinking in FCPX, but it only relinks back to the .mov.
I’ve tried opening Red Cine X Pro and was able to import an exported FCPXML. When I imported that into Red Cine and relinked the files, I was left with a super long timeline with gaps. All the clips were there, but full length. They weren’t trimmed or edited.
Seems like the Red Cine workflow is the answer, but it doesn’t like my FCPXML.
Using newest versions of FCPX, MacOS, Red Cine.

July 16, 2018 at 5:20 pmOk, got it to RedCineX. Had to use XtoCC to create a regular XML. Relinked to the R3D files no problem. Now want to export back as FCPXML. Using the export (shallow) function in RedCine only sends back a FCPXML of the clips. There’s no sequence/project when I import to FCPX. What am I missing?

July 16, 2018 at 5:45 pmRCX kinda sucks with FCPXML. Actually, no, it doesn’t kinda suck, it does suck.
Export a shallow XML, and then use SendToX to translate.

July 16, 2018 at 5:50 pmThat worked. Except now I have a bunch of unlinked wav files in the browser and of course the audio is offline for all the RED clips in the timeline. Luckily we’re not really using audio this video. But the clips did have dual stereo tracks on the original red files. I’d love to know what went awry there.

July 16, 2018 at 5:58 pmYou mean the audio didn’t relink?
Was the audio on the R3D the same as the Proxies?

July 16, 2018 at 6:06 pmIt was rough edited with the ProRes proxies from the set. Then I exported that as FCPXML and used XtoCC to make it XML. Then imported into RedCine and relinked to the R3Ds and all was well. Of course the audio was now represented as 4 tracks in the RedCine timeline. Then I exported the timeline as XML and used send to X to convert it to FCPXML. Imported to FCPX and the timeline is fine, except the clips are synced clips. Open them up and they’re the R3D clip synced to a wav that doesn’t exist anywhere and never did. It’s like send to X or RedCine just decided to make that part up. There have never been any wav files associated with the project. Try to relink them and it even gives a file path but nothing created any wavs. Weird. I’d prefer it too if it were a timeline with the original R3Ds, not synced clips.

July 16, 2018 at 6:11 pmI see. So the audio that is now “wavs” was probably the original audio in the Proxy movies.
All the R3D project I do usually have separate, discrete audio, so I can’t say that I’ve seen this before.
Try opening the shallow XML in Resolve (if you have it) and see what the audio does.
Where were the proxies made? On the camera during recording or later?
Do you still have access to the audio in a earlier timeline? You could always detach that audio and copy/paste it in to the relinked timeline.

July 16, 2018 at 6:26 pmNah the original proxies from the shoot were just 1080p ProResLT with embedded PCM audio.

July 16, 2018 at 7:27 pm[Bret Williams] “Nah the original proxies from the shoot were just 1080p ProResLT with embedded PCM audio.
“I understand, but in the translation, that information somehow got changed to “wavs” instead of just linking to the audio of the Proxy movies.
I would try Resolve and see if that works. Resolve can link to the R3D too (although it’s a bit trickier) and export to FCPXML.

July 16, 2018 at 8:19 pmNext time. Haven’t downloaded latest resolve yet. Good enough for today without the audio thankfully. Thanks for your assistance as always!

July 16, 2018 at 8:33 pmI spoke too soon. It actually appears now that when redline linked the files, it only relinked the mov to the first of the r3d files. So if the mov required the 4 4gig files to be stitched together, it only linked to the first, and then just froze the last frame for the rest of the duration. What a mess.
