Can I Keep a 60fps Clip in a 30fps Project, Without Conforming?
Hi,
Often times, I shoot an interview in 4K (30fps, 30fps project) and add b-roll from action footage shot in 1080 60fps. Sometimes the results are stuttery.
Is there a proper, or even possible, workflow for adding a 60fps clip to a 30fps project, WITHOUT having to conform the 60fps to 30fps; the idea was to have smoother results with action footage at 60fps. Wouldn’t conforming defeat the purpose?
My camera doesn’t have 60fps for 4K…

Do you want the 60fps to play back at 50% speed, so it matches the 30fps timeline but isn’t dropping every other frame? If so, drop the clip into your timeline and under your Retime options pick Automatic Speed. It will automatically retime your 60fps to play back at a 1:1 frame match, so if you’re in a 30fps timeline it will slow it down by 50%.
If you’re going to be doing this a lot, I recommend mapping Automatic Speed to your keyboard. It will save you a lot of time.

No—I want to KEEP the 60fps clip as a 60fps clip in a 30fps project. The 60fps is action footage, and I want that at normal speed. Everything else, or the interview, would be in 30fps. Is this even possible?

Well, then you have 60fps of data that need to fit into a 30fps space. Every other frame will not be shown. There’s no way around that really. If it’s fast action, you’re losing half the temporal data and it’s going to be stuttery because the frames that remain were shot at a higher shutter speed.
This is why broadcast is essentially two formats. 1080i or 720 60p. So everything fits without stripping away any temporal data into what bandwidth they have. The 60p stuff maps to 60 fields in 1080i and to 60 frames in 720p.
To achieve the same simple compatibility on the web, where there are no fields, your best bet is to edit in a 1080 60p project. 30p stuff would look just like it would in 30p and the 60p wouldn’t stutter. From there you could output lesser formats like 1080i, 1080p30 or 720p60/30. The 30p formats would of course stutter the fast action 60p stuff.
