I have a long documentary that requires popups that give fact bites or factoids.

    They contain:
a motion background that animates into place similar to a lower third

a motion project that has animated graphics and text which is editable

and an ease in and ease out sound effect.

These occur multiple time in each of the eleven segments.

If I make them into a compound clip will the edits I make be unique on the timeline and will the ones already done remain unique?

You have to make the compounds as independent on the timeline by selecting each and choosing Clip > Reference New Parent Clip.

    What Jeremy said.

If you are going to do a lot of these – it would probably be worth it to learn how to design the “info callouts” as a Motion generator and Publish it into X. That way you could just import instances as required and change the text and text attributes more easily – while not Creating too many Compound Clips to manage in your Browser.

The X-Motion linkage is ideal for this type of task.

    YMMV.
