Need suggestions on footage management.
I work for a small company. We most time shoot informercials and sometimes ads. Over a year, after 20+ projects, now we got 12T+ footages. Since we only serve local clients, many footages are reusable. So I need some suggestions from your experiences to handle all those footages more efficiently.
I used to backup all dailies to an external hard drive. Then I make an other copy to Synology server, which will be the footages I’ll actually use. But since my Mac always has trouble with Synology, I gave up this method.
Now I import (with copy) all the footages directly into FCPX, skip the step of making a copy to Synology server. FCPX libraries will stay on my local drive before they are finished. Then I will copy whole library to Synology server.
This way, I only have to deal with the trouble of Synology once in a while. But new trouble is if I want use old footages, I couldn’t use search anymore, because all the footages are packaged in FCPX libraries.Of course, the best way is a fast enough server that FCPX could open and save libraries directly on it. But these kind of server are too expensive. Or simply just switch to PC, since PC never have any problem with Synology servers. But FCPX is too good to give up.
If you have same setup, I’d like to hear your workflow, especially how you handle your footages. Thanks.
