  • Collecting a library for working offsite with only proxies

Posted by Alan Langdon on April 28, 2017 at 3:13 pm

I have a project which mixes optimized and original media, in FCP 10.3.1
I am now wanting to travel with the project, taking with me only proxies and the original media.
I have created proxies for every clip.
Now I want to collect these files (proxies only) to take with me. When I choose Consolidate in the Library Properties, and chose only Proxy Media in the next window, it claims I don’t have enough space on the travel HD, but I know it does have enough for the proxies. Could FCPX be trying to copy more than just the proxies?

Try Consolidating the Library to a different drive and then copy to the travel.

This process doesn’t seem to work as smooth as it should for me (of late).
    Gotta love inheriting projects 😛
This one is a nightmare mixed across four USB 3 drives (good lord they are slow) and mixed Proxy/Optimized.
Consolidating takes forever and at times crashes FCPX.
I know this is an old thread has it not been updated to accommodate this workflow?
I am constantly toggling drives (mount/eject) so I can see which files keep missing.
Not so sure if there is another way out of this mess.

I finally got it to work.
The Library was a whopping 8TB.
Really should start charging by the terabyte 😛

    Spoke too soon.
When you start playing the “View” game (Optimized/Original or Proxy) you start to find files missing.
Now, of course, I can just ignore but some files are mixed up so now I’m making sure they are all Proxy.
    Fun times.

Well, this has been a nightmare for me.
I managed to create a perfect Library both Optimized/Original and Proxy.
Then I copied the whole Library to another volume using the Finder.
When opening the new Library on the new volume, its been hell trying to get all the links back.
And why did I lose the link when its all in the same Library?
Then to just feel better, I went and opened the original Library which also lost all the links.
Doing the toggle view is just killing here 😛

    Okay, here’s a new wrinkle.
When I try to do a Consolidate, it created the files outside of the Library subfolder.
The weird part is that it does it in mear seconds.
I’m talking over 5TB of data that seems to be duplicated since its already residing in the Library.
I am done trying to deal with this POS.
Gotta make sure no client ever hands me something like this again 😛
