    Duplicate your text layer.
    Make the duplicate bold.
    Apply Effect>Transitions>Linear Wipe to both layers.
    Animate and adjust as needed.

    Alternatively, you could thicken the stroke on the layers.

    I don’t know why that tutorial has you animate the opacity of the stroke layer style instead of the thickness. Surely that would make more sense.

    Also, you could convert the text to shape layers and animate the stroke there with a bit more control.
