Posted by Jacob Weber on December 19, 2016 at 9:46 pmHello,
I want to have in one mask (color or shape) several effects
is it possible to to copy a mask and paste on another effect? or make a group and a mask on the group… like in photoshop?
Thank you in advance

December 20, 2016 at 1:48 amYeah that’s not really a mask on its own- it’s a mask for color correction so you do inside/outside grading. I.e. lighten or darken up a face vs a background etc. If you copy paste the color correction, the mask comes along.
If you want a mask in the sense of a matte with no related color grade, use Effects>Video>Masks.
Also with respect- I can see you are new to FCPX. You’ get up to speed much faster if you simply google for basic questions and save the forum for the more complex workflow concerns.

December 20, 2016 at 5:08 pmInteresting,
how about a shape mask? is it possible to copy the same shape and keyframes where the mask is moving to another effect?
I tried with TrackX plugin, I can copy the footage to another layer and make a shape mask in the new layer and all the effects will show only in the shape
I dont need the tracking from that software, and in general it quite slow, and my triyal is going to expire soon… is there anyway i can have the same option to have several effects in one shape mask with out having to use the that software?Thank you in advance

December 20, 2016 at 5:22 pmDraw Mask lets you draw a mask of any shape you like. Apply it to just one layer or apply it to a compound clip affecting a “group” as you mentioned earlier.

July 31, 2020 at 8:59 amHi!
I’m also new to FCPX (since yesterday:) and while googling for same issue I got here so probably there is not much reasonable explanation on this topic.I’d like to understand this a bit better having some more doubts. Let’s say I want to apply Color Board, Color Curves and Hue/Saturation effects separately to some area and outside of that area. Assuming the required mask is quite complex – do I need to recreate it manually for each effect?
If there is any good reading/video on this topic I’d be happy to have a look.

May 6, 2021 at 4:34 amI want to do exactly the same, quite often, and i can’t believe that in 2021 fcpx is still not able to copy a single mask from an effect to another ?
ps: not mentioning that i get bugs quite often with masks reinitialising to the default while copying effects from clips to others (version 10.4.10) …… 🙁
