  • New To FCP – trying to set up second monitor

Posted by Don Cobble on November 3, 2016 at 1:27 am

When i hook up a second monitor my FCP stops showing the video( in pause, stop and when skimming) on both screens. but, when I hit play the video shows on both screens?
I have the second monitor hook up via a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter.
My desire is to use the Retina display for my program monitor and color correcting and the HDMI monitor for the timeline and editing. FCP seems to freak out when I have another monitor connected?
    Thank You for help

sounds like you are mirroring to the second display vs outputting as a second monitor.

Noah – Thank You, but not that was not the problem, It just so happened, I upgraded to 2 monitors at the same time I updated FCP to 10.3
It turns out with the update 10.3 FCP no longer supports the Grass Valley HQX quicktime files. 10.2 does support it. They will play in FCP 10.3 but when play is stopped, paused or scrubbing the preview screen goes black. You can only hear the audio in scrubbing. Almost all the footage I get to edit is HQX Quicktime files, I was migrating over to FCPX from Edius WG Pro8 and was happy I did not I have to optimized the files for editing (in FCP 10.2).
I regularly edit 7 Camera multicam (1 Hour long program 7 hours of footage!) that’s a lot of optimizing of footage – do you know if I can I roll back to FCP 10.2 it worked fine with that?
    Thanks
    Don
