Adding Black Bars Behind text and Parenting
Hey guys
I’m trying to streamline the process of making facebook videos with black bar text captions like this:

(Not my work just an example)Normally i’d use after effects but it just takes too long to make it worth it
So I’m using a text effect in FCPX to have the words fade onto the screen. Something like 3 lines of text all fading in at same time.
I would like to add black “caption” bars like the example provided. So the black bars fade with the text effect.
First is there a more efficient way to make black bars other than bringing in a PNG and duplicating and stretching?
Secondly can I somehow parent the PNG or background bars to fade in or out with the text effect.
Thanks a lot for any help! This process could save me hours of work

You could easily build your own effect in Motion and drop in wherever you want. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx8uub7N75Y

Hmm,
The effect shown in the video is not “easily created in Motion”.
Google for TKY Subtitler – it’s free. The best one matching the video is Subtitle X from Digital Heaven.
You can also download XTI. You don’t have to use it. Just launch it once and it will install a title effect called TextUp Box. After that you can delete the app.Andreas

I watched the video and that seems perfect. I’ve downloaded Motion and have already started thanks!

So I’m at the point where I’ve taken the effect into Motion..I’ve created the black bars but the problem is when I bring it into FCPX the bars are not adjustable
Ideally the bars would stretch depending on the size of the text…An adjustable layer maybe…

Make sure you are publishing the parameters for the bar’s scaling from Motion before sending back to FCPX. Almost any parameter you can adjust in Motion can be made available to FCPX.
