I have 24p tiff image sequences and need to convert to ProRes4444 at 29.97fps. The content is animation.

What is the correct procedure for re-timing these in AE CS5?

    Thanks,
    Phil

Thanks Dave…I will look at the resources you supplied.

I want to note that I am not ever going to tape, staying in file based environment. Editing in both MC and FCP at 1080p/2997.

This is character animation source that will eventually be synced with sound. Do I still need to select the 23.976 instead of 24 for the Interpret footage and add 3:2? I have been selecting 24 and changing composition settings to 29.97 and rendering out ProRes.

    Thanks,
    Phil

[Dave LaRonde] “I’d like to know why you simply can’t animate at 29.97p and be done with it. You’ll save yourself a boatload of problems.”

The animation exists as true 24p and will not be changed. I do not want to introduce interlacing into a file-based 1080p/2997 (if that is what choosing fields and adding 3:2 will do) or am I misunderstanding.

I see your problem — interlacing (like 3:2 pulldown) is only a good idea when the delivery format is a television.

Dropping the 24 into a 30fps comp will cause every 5th frame to be duplicated, which creates choppy motion. In the end, it’s your call, however — there are times when somewhat-choppy motion has been an acceptable option compared to the alternatives.

Another possibility comes to mind, however: the Timewarp filter. Drop your 24fps sequence in a 30fps comp, apply Timewarp, then change the speed parameter to 80% to go from 24fps to 30fps. The filter will use the existing image data to create new frames (using a kind of morphing technology). The success of this process largely depends on what the existing images are doing — it’s best to apply the filter and see what happens.
