Izotope Rx4 vs Soundsoap?
I’m looking into getting some software to help with noise stuff in film. I’ve been doing a lot of person on the film street shooting and there is lots of background noise!
I’m thinking of either Izotope or Soundsoap. Thoughts on the issue?

I own both.
Soundsoap is cheap, simple to use, does an ok job once you get the hang of it, which takes about ten minutes once you’ve read the user guide. Great for a quick fix on simple problems.
Izotope RX is a professional audio tool, and if it can be fixed, this is the tool thats going to do it – especially the advanced version which is not cheap but worth every penny. I’ve owned it for three years now and I am still learning new ways to use it.
Which is to say buy iZoptope RX if that’s what you’re thinking, and you will be able to deal with pretty much any audio issue that comes your way.

Just re-reading the post, you definitely want to be using isotope RX for street interview background noise.
Keep in mind that street noise in general is fairly broad spectrum noise so nothing is really going to make up for just getting a good signal to noise ratio in the first place. You will be able to target particular sounds and parts of the noise spectrum though.

There is a microphone that locally is known as the “NYC microphone”. Its a Sanken CS3. For recording audio on busy streets with trucks, buses, you name it, the CS3 rules. Get your sound guy to use one of these pics properly and you won;t have to sweat much in post.

I also own both iZotope RX and SoundSoap and concur with Jeff’s assessment. SoundSoap is great for quick fixes of broadband noise but iZotope RX is a surgical instrument that has no equal. It goes way beyond broadband noise reduction and can remove sounds like the screech of a truck’s breaks when stopping without removing the sound of the engine of the truck. It’s that precise. If you can afford it… just get it. It will pay for itself.
I used iZotope RX to removed the sound of someone kicking over a chair in the middle of a speech and it was as if the chair had never fallen over. Just magic.
