  • Cartooning in AE7?

I’m working on a 2D project, and wondered about the best way to approach certain simple tasks when ‘cartooning’ in AE7.

For instance: blinking. For the first segment I just applied a brute force approach, and used a layer that I popped in and out w/Opacity keyframes.

But it strikes me that using Time Remapping may be a more flexible approach: make the character blinking as a pre-comp, and use Time Remap keys to coordinate the time of blinking. At the least, this eliminates one layer in a crowded timeline.

Anyone do any cartooning in AE7? Remember, this is one version BEFORE the ‘Puppetry’ plugin was released with AE. (Dagnabit.)

There are some character animation resources linked to from here that show how to do character animation with time remapping.

I just linked someone to that Aharon Rabinowitz tutorial just the other day!

Some other good cartooning things in AE might be useful for you:
    Inverse Kinematics: https://www.motionscript.com/design-guide/ik.html

    Walk Cycle: https://library.creativecow.net/articles/ebberts_dan/layer_looping.php

(If you’re reading this in your email and the links aren’t working, read this post on the COW.)

Yes. I think the page I linked to was from back on AE 6.

INteresting. I wonder if there’s a way to use IK and to get a nice solid outline around the (outside of only) character, as the art direction requires.

    Thanks for the link.

You can get an outline by precomposing your character animation and adding Vegas or Glow to the precomp and messing with the settings.
