Harware requirements for editing Pro Res on FCPX
Hi All, I’m not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes…
My next project I am going to capture video using a Atomos Ninja 2 for higher quality. My editor and I have older MacBook Pros, and I’m wondering what is the minimum hardware requirements we need to edit? He is using PremierPro and I was going to work with FCPX. Thanks! -

I’m using a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012), 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB Memory, 1TB SSD, & NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB with FCP X and it runs fine. I’m editing native AVCHD. I would recommend at least a Core i7 but some people use a Core i5. More memory and an SSD are good upgrades for older MacBook Pros.

Depends how old. Anything ~2011 or new should be ok.

I have a 2011 Mac Book, Intel graphics 3000 512 MB, 2 Ghz i7, 16 MB RAM.

Yea, that should do fine. That model also has an AMD Radeon HD 6490M with 256 MB of dedicated GDDR5 memory in addition to the Intel HD Graphics 3000. FCP X will turn on the AMD chip and you should see fairly good performance. Add an SSD drive and it will be like getting a new computer.

My 2006 MacPro edits pro res just fine. It’s more about the drive speed and the res. Talking SD? HD? 4K? Editing pro res on an older computer is much easier than h264 with 1/8 the data rate.
