Rebuilding an FCP X project
Posted by Michael Sanders on November 17, 2015 at 6:25 pmSo after a year of hearing nothing, a client finally got back to me about a job we effectively finished yesterday.
The edit was in FCP X – not sure what version but it was one of the versions where it still renamed the clips by date and time.
The rushes were shot on a C300 and archived to Blu ray in the original card structure.
Of course opening up the project means its all empty and the files need relinking but with the above in mind its not all straight forward.
Has anyone got any bright ideas how I can relink this all?

File > Import > Reimport from Camera/Archive

November 17, 2015 at 9:22 pmThanks. This didn’t seem to work – I’m guessing because I didn’t create the camera archives through FCP X. I imported the cards first then backed them up via shot put pro.
I did have a brain wave which was to import the clips into a new “import” FCP X project, putting the media outside the project folder, and then relink the clips in the original project to the new clips.
It seems to work but can only seem to do it clip by clip, not bulk – which is v annoying.

November 17, 2015 at 9:31 pmIf you drag the encompassing folder of the media to the “Favorites” section of the import window, close the import window, the do File …. Reimport, it should work.

November 18, 2015 at 10:22 amTried that and it doesn’t work 🙁
So far the only way I can find that works is by relinking them one at a time.
I have even tried putting each days clips in their own events so there is no conflict of dates and filenames.
Open to any bright ideas.

November 18, 2015 at 12:44 pmDo you mind showing a few screen grabs of your original library and what the archived media looks like?
Reimport should work, but it is tricky and not straight forward.

November 18, 2015 at 12:46 pmI forgot that I made a video of this. The beginning goes by quickly, but it shows dragging the encompassing folder of the card structure to favorites.
See if this helps.

Many thanks for your help. I have tried all you suggested but the reimport from camera/archive option remains stubbornly greyed out.
Here are some pics – I hope they make sense. Can’t seem to upload the pics so here’s a dropbox link..

November 18, 2015 at 5:01 pmThanks for the pics.
One more favor.
Can you click on one of the offline files and show me the inspector with the ‘info’ tab selected and the “basic” view chosen?
