Tricky Question – looking for MultiCam Soecialist
hi to all of you,
Following tricky situation: editing MultiCam: 1 camera SONY A7s in full HD, the SONY FS7 is in UHD 4K.
I’m editing in a HD 1080p TL.
It’s a show registration. The reason I shot the total shot of the stage in 4K, so i can zoom in afterwards without losing detail and have also a medium shot.
Now, in the MultiCam Timeline, I can not change the Spatial conform tab, so I have to do reveal in editor and there I can change the total shot accordingly and zoom in. Problem is: that if I do open in editor, it’s not match framing it to the same position I had in the MultiCam TL.
Is there a way to match frame a point in the MultiCam timeline to editor set up timeline of the MultiCam clip?Thanx a lot.

No, and this is something Apple really needs to fix with Multicam. First of all, send them feedback. If enough of us complain, hopefully they’ll fix this oversight.
Secondly, what resolution is your multiclip? Did you make a 1080 multiclip (it sounds like it). Have you considered making a 4K multiclip instead?
I haven’t worked with those resolutions in a multiclip before, but it seems to me that if you cut your 4K multiclip into a 1080 timeline, then you could just make transform adjustments in the inspector without having to go into the multiclip editor.
Of course, you’d have to resize all your 1080 clips because they’d show up small in the cut, but you just resize one and then copy paste attributes for the others. One warning if you do this: Don’t resize the 1080 clip in the multiclip editor and then expect it to look good when it’s sized down in the timeline. It won’t. Just do the cut and then size up the 1080 shots.

One workaround is to create additional multicam tracks with your footage already zoomed and switch to those as needed. I do a low budget web talk show shot with two GH4s. One wide, one on the guest. I then duplicate the wide angle and frame a closeup of the host, then just treat it as a third angle.

In general, that is a great idea, but unfortunately it’s not a static thing like a talk show.
It’s dance, which means, each time a different zoom factor and re location of the canvas to show a particular part of the stage in that moment is needed.
It seems the only way – which would really suck – is:To calculate the time difference (offset) of the TC of the MultiCam timeline and of the editor view TL.
And then each time calculate the difference and jump to the right points in the other TL.
Very analogue and time consuming, but the best I could think of so far.Greetings,

I feel your pain… I guess my next question is (and this may just be ignorance on my part) but why can’t you just scale and keyframe the clip on the timeline side? Is there any real quality difference?
I always thought that on export Final Cut would scale up/down from the original media size so does it matter whether the clip is set to fit or fill or scaled in the angle editor or from the timeline? Aren’t all the options just entries in a database telling FCPX what to do with that particular source clip?
