C100 clips are 60i in camera but 29.97i in FCPX
Hello, after many years of sitting in the client chair at one of the local TV stations, directing our TV spots, I have purchased FCPX, watched many tutorials, and started editing. When we shot today the Canon C100 camera displayed that we were shooting 1080i 60i 24Mbs, but when I bring the clips into FCPX the inspector shows 1080i 29.97i. The clips are AVCHD before import and show H.264, Linear PCM for the Codec.
1. why does FCPX see the frame rate/format differently than the camera?
2. Is there any advantage to use Media Encoder to convert the clips to 59.96p ProRes before importing them or another format?

60i and 29.97i are interchangeable terms.
It’s confusing, but those are both the same format. 60i is short for 59.94i FIELDS per second, which is 29.97i FRAMES per second.
59.94p is usually 720p material. You can shoot 59.94p in 1080, but it’s hard to broadcast.

Thanks Jeremy. In the past the footage has been converted to 1080 59.94p ProRes. Since the C100 shoots at half that frame rate is there any benefit converting to 59.94p or is 29.97p just as good with half the file size?
I have seen a post about changing the 29.97i to p by selecting Progressive in the inspector, will that give the same results as using Media Encoder, or Compressor?

Until1080p60 becomes a more ubiquitous TV standard, I’d stick with shooting 29.97p.
Converting 29.97p to 59.94p is superfluous.
If you really need 60p, then you can shoot at 720p, which runs at 59.94p.

X’s internal deinterlacer does pretty decent, but I don’t use it much as we always shoot p. I’d run some test and find out.

I have been shooting 59.9 fps 1080 p on my Canon XA20 at 37 Mbs recently and FCPX recognizes it fine as above and it plays in X at the correct rate. It definitely improves sections where I use slow motion. On the other hand, I am not going out to broadcast TV, instead out to Youtube and Vimeo and I use compressor to go to 1080 30p before that.
