  FCPX crashes when opening project on external drive

  Help! I’m a FCPX editing newbie. A project I’m working on was working fine yesterday and today when I tried to open it (it’s on an external drive) it crashes every time. I also get a message that says my 1TB drive (that holds the project and media) doesn’t have sufficient memory. At this point it feels like I have to start over from scratch and re-edit which is a total bummer. And ideas? Thank you for your help in advance.
