Final Cut Pro taking up so much space
Posted by Barnaby Winser on December 28, 2014 at 8:36 pmMy Final Cut Pro X library is taking up 200GB of storage when I only have around 10GB of original media.
Why is this happening and how do I clear the space without re-installing the program?

The more important question is, with hard drives at an all time low cost right now, why are you up against the storage wall?

December 28, 2014 at 10:22 pmWhy do I need to buy a new hard drive? Can’t I just clear the space?

December 29, 2014 at 4:39 amLook in the library and see what files are being generated. It is probably making some large optimized media files, that you may be able to work without. Check your import settings.

December 29, 2014 at 5:51 pmThe original media is highly compressed and FCPX makes the files more manageable to edit with.
buy more storage or try not optimising media but I find this slows the edit down quite a lot.

December 29, 2014 at 7:36 pmIMO the easiest solution is using FCP Library Manager, which is a very cheap, simple-to-use utility: https://www.arcticwhiteness.com/finalcutlibrarymanager/
I have no relationship to the company, just a user.
There are various other utilities to track down space consumption. I personally like Araxis Folder Size Explorer: https://www.araxis.com/folder-size-explorer/

December 30, 2014 at 12:36 amI was using Final Cut Library Manager but the most recent version seems to have some issues. In the past I was using X-Wiper but it hadn’t been updated to work with the 10.1 Library format and I stopped using it. Since I was having trouble with FCLM I checked on X-Wiper recently and it’s been updated and works fine on my systems. It’s in the App Store.

If you just want to clear the space, select your Library and choose File | Delete Generated Library Files… and check off the file types you want to delete. You can also do this at the Event level by selecting an Event and choosing File | Delete Generated Event Files….
Choosing to delete unused render files would be the first order of clean up with no ill effects. After that deleting all render files is safe since you can regenerate them if needed. Finally deleting optimized and proxy media would be the last resort to clean up space if it’s really needed. That will cause your projects to use the original source media and get you back closer to your 10GB of original media.
