  • Best 4k raw camera for FCPX (that isn’t red)

Posted by John Davidson on October 29, 2014 at 4:41 pm

    Hey guys,

I’d prefer to use a RED epic, but it turns out that using them for interviews can be a little risky with the fan noise issue.

What camera has the best RAW 4k workflow with fcpx? C500? F5/F55? Looks like Arri doesn’t have a 4k camera yet. If I shot 4k but only wanted 10bit 4:2:2, what is the best choice for that on a rental camera? Workflow with FCPX is obviously a big concern because I don’t want to get bogged down in any ridiculousness in post.

    Thanks!

    The Arri Amira shoots 4K.

Depending on your needs, the BMPC does a darn good job for the money.

Is tha Amira update to 4k actually available right now? I read end of 2014 I think.

Oops, I tricked my brain into thinking it already existed.

The fact they are going to charge for it is going to upset some people.

I shoot with a Sony F55 and it’s dead silent. It does 4K internally (XAVC 422) or to an add on recorder (Raw). I love it for interviews!

There are plenty of 4 K cameras actually, the real question is whether you are prepared for the data load…

Hoping to save up for the Blackmagic URSA, looks very sweet and well within a reasonable price range. Always wanted a Red but out of my budget. The BMD 4K production camera looks very nice as well. Best part, Resolve is thrown in with it! Wait, looks like I am getting too excited, best to lay off the iced coffee.

Our DP actually owns an F5, so we decided to run with the camera he’s most familiar with, recording internally as well as 4k 10 bit to a KiProQuad. Then we’re putting two GH4’s on each side of primary camera (2 person interview, limited time). This should give us tons of coverage and lots of options.

I think maybe Gh4 has the dead simplest 4k workflow out there. Nice codec and excellent images. Very excited to see how this works out.

We just received our URSA (still waiting for our Canon Cinema lens). It records Raw and all flavors of ProRes. Just pop the CFast 2 card into a reader and you’re good to go with FCPX. Shooting Raw is a bit more complicated workflow. ProRes makes it easy.
