So networked external storage is NOT cool? Only SANs?
Was really excited by the prospects of 10.1 and we’re now editing a piece at the office. Copied all the material to an external Pegasus RAID that’s our main media contact. Began to copy the library to my internal RAID, but figured I might as well start working while I waited for the copy to finish.
Apparently, NO CAN DO?
I can only open local libraries or libraries stored on a SAN? This seems a bit odd to me… why can’t I open a library over a network volume that’s mounted to my system. Is there some hack to get around this? Is it because this is a “managed” storage library and not an external library?
I guess I need to do a little more reading into workflows, but if external media can only live on a SAN or locally this is kind of a non-starter for our office environment (at least for the time being). Can someone help sort me out?

You have to do Sparse Disks for what you’re wanting to do. It’s what we do.

This is one that we have in as a feature request for change. The days of 100bT networking is very well in the past. There really is no real reason to stick with this limitation from a technology standpoint.
Let the user determine if their infrastructure is too limited for real use.

The media itself can live on a NAS. You just have to use externally managed media. This was always true with FCP X, but now it’s easier to import directly to a location on your NAS. Your library file has to be on a SAN or in a sparse bundle.
I haven’t upgraded yet to 10.1. But I’m going to store media in folders on the NAS. Then store libraries within a sparse bundle also on the NAS.
I’m not crazy about sparse bundles (they are difficult to backup), but it will do the job for now.

NFS will work if your server supports it. AFP or SMB will not.

I wasn’t happy with NFS performance over 10Gbe. Perhaps it’s better now, but it’s still kind of a hot mess IMHO.

That doesn’t mean I am in love with sparse disks either, but it’s just the best / easiest solution for us, for now.
