  1440×1080 and 1920x 1080

  Hello, I’m a high school teacher. My student has worked long and hard in FCPX on a film he created using two cameras. One is 1440 x 1080 and the other is 1920 x 1080. He has laid out the whole film in the timeline. He saw no problem while editing, but when he exported as .mov we see lines in the 1920 x 1080 clips.

  We are on a deadline- it’s the end of the year. I’d like to be able to tell him there is magic fix that he can perform with out having to lay out the whole timeline again.

  I understand there is a workflow for dealing with 1440 x1080 as you are importing and setting up project properties. BUT ITS TOO LATE.

  Here’s what I would do, after checking the original media to make sure it is clean. What are your export settings?

  Because you are asking FCP to adjust the pixel aspect ratio of the clips, and to transcode the media, then also expect the export to take quite a while.

  FCP will set the timeline settings according to the first clip you put in the timeline. Try this: Make a new project, add a 1920×1080 clip to the timeline and and then copy and paste the previous project next to the 1920×1080 clip. Then delete that first clip (because you are only using it to set the sequence settings). It will then render, then 1440×1080 clips to 1920×1080. When you export it will, transcode the codec.

  Second thing to try is basically the same thing but with using XML magic. Export the XML. Open a new project and fix the settings by putting one clip in there then Import the XML.

  You might even try: exporting the XML event, then use the other workflow you mentioned. Create a new project and import the XML.

  Horizontal lines? Is your 1080 footage interlaced?

  Odd, there should not be any issue with this. I just did a project just yesterday that mixed these two frame sizes.

  Can you post a screen shot of what you are seeing? I’m thinking these are horizontal lines, ie interlacing.

  Have you tried exporting a small portion as a 720p or 480p movie for Apple devices?
