Color correction to Resolve
I’ve seen the statement made that color correction in FCP X transfers as primary correction into Resolve via the FCPXML. Supposedly the color board info is carried as CDL values. I don’t see it. Is this supposed to be true or was this simply an incorrect statement? If true, what are the steps to follow?

In the few tuts I did awhile back I remember it being stated and demonstrated that the color correction is kept, but not utilized in resolve. IOW, anything in the xml that resolve doesn’t understand, it leaves alone and transfers back. So if you adjust color in X, it won’t be seen in resolve. But when resolve sends it back, you’ll still have your color correction doubling on top of the resolve color correction if you don’t turn it off. But that was almost a year ago, so maybe it has gotten better. But I’d think that would be a HUGE development that Apple shoud be exploiting if that’s the case.

Clearly that would be the absolutely wrong thing to do if it were happening. So far I’ve only tested that one way, FCP X to Resolve. Not the full roundtrip. The objective, if it worked, would be to do some preliminary correction in X and then pick up from there in Resolve. Naturally you’d want to be able to remove that if going to an outside colorist, since the last thing they’d want would be the editor’s corrections. Just like the Pro Tools guys who naturally remove any plug-ins, levels, and pans from the edit.

It seems that although Resolve “recognises” the FCP X color corrections it doesn’t translate them accurately, even as a starting point.

Thanks. Looks like complete junk, I’m afraid, from what I can tell in this video. Of course, FCP 7 can send 3-way CC settings to Color, but they aren’t correct either.

Agreed – from this evidence the colors look even more scrambled than we used to get in the FCP7 to Color workflow.
