Well I just finished editing a very large feature length project. My first actually, so please excuse my newbie mistake here.

Basically I edited off the scratch camera audio for much of it never bothering to create the synched audio compound clips unless scratch was missing.

    Big mistake.

Now I have to go back and add back in synched audio sources before sending to my sound engineer. Most scenes have 1-2 lavs and a boom mic.

Is there anyway to do this super easily? My big fear is places where I have cut a clip up like 10 times and will now have to go recut that new synched track to match those ins and outs. Could be HUNDREDS or Thousands of cuts. Not even sure.

I’m assuming there is no automatic way to switch out a synched audio compound clip with the original clip automatically — but here is me praying I’m wrong!!!!

    Thanks all!

Hopefully you had matching timecode. Look at Sync N Link X from Intellegent Assisance / Assisted Editing.

Well some do. A lot don’t. But would this software be able to replace clips ALREADY in a timeline? Or is it more like plural eyes.

Basically I have a few things in my timeline:

1)Video with scratch audio from camera that is not time coded to audio
2)Video without scratch audio that is time coded
3)some multicam clips that are synched to audio already
4)some compound clips that are synched to audio

So what I need to do is create synched audio compound clips and replace clip types 1-3. Type 4 is obviously fine already.

I can have FCPX create the compound synched audio clips for me in the even browser.

BUT I am trying to find automated way to replace the unsyched clips in the Timeline…

    Thanks!!!!!

Jacob there’s no easy way to say this, but editing prior synching audio is a BIG no, no…. There’s ways around it, let me know if your still interested, or have you worked out a solution?

Out of curiosity, are your raw or original clips shot as long form clips, or are the short individual ones?

I’m not totally sure what you mean. It’s a feature film shot on the Alexa. I guess the clips are as long as the scenes are. So it varies. A lot of times a single clip is cut up and used in multiple chunks in the time line. So take one and take two might each be cut up 5 times and interleaved in a storyline.

Do you have FCP 7 available to you?

First, are you sure that the Alexa files don’t already have the clean audio? If not, continue with this possible strategy.

    1. Import all the Alexa clips and audio files into FCP 7 (new project).
    2. Sync the two and create merged clips.
    3. Export QT reference files of the merged clips to a separate folder. (note – you might need to modify the file name if they say “merged”)
    4. Export your FCP X project as FCPXML.
    5. Convert to FCP 7 sequence using Xto7 (purchase required). (note – alternative might be translation via free DaVinci Resolve)
    6. Import XML from Xto7 into FCP 7 (new project). Take all clips offline and and relink to the reference files. May get some warnings. Ignore them.
    7. If the sequence is properly translated, then matchframe and replace all clips with audio to get any additional tracks not in your original cut.
    8. Export an OMF file from FCP 7 for your mixer.

    Hope that helps.

yeah the alexa only has a stereo track, where as i have 5 mono channels of HQ. so its def not in the alexa

ok what you’re saying makes sense will give it a try!]

basically use 7 to relink instead of X

do you have much experience with how good a job the X to 7 converter will do?
