Copy Files to Final Cut Events Folder
Wondering if anyone else has had this issue who might be able to help me out.
When I try to import footage through the import media window I don’t have the option of unchecking “Copy files to Final Cut Events folder” because it’s greyed out. I’ve tested it with AVCHD, 5D H.264 and P2 DVCPROHD clips. No luck on any of them.
Any idea why this might be happening?
In my import preferences I have everything unchecked.

If you’re using the camera import portion of the unified import window, the option to copy or not copy is always grayed out.

Unfortunately no,
I’m importing the footage from an external hard drive. The files are the exact copies of the data from a card though. Wonder if it’s possible that FCPX thinks the folder is a camera.

That’s exactly right. FCP sees the camera archive as it was a camera and that the material has to be copied out of it. This is actually a good thing, because you want to keep the camera archive separate so it cannot get accidentally corrupted or deleted.

Hmm so does this mean I don’t have the option of using media alias’s rather than copying the original media?
My hope was to import clips as proxy or optimized media without having to copy over the original media.

If you are copying from a camera archive you always must copy the original media to the event. If you make optimized media you can if you wish trash the original media files. I wouldn’t, so FCP process final output from the originated media not from an intermediate, but you can.

Thanks for the help Tom, and that makes sense in a way I hadn’t thought about before. I’m so used to making everything prores for purposes of editing in FCP legacy that I didn’t stop to think that a benefit of being able to have access to the original media would allow me to create a final render from the source material even though I didn’t have to edit using that original source material.
