How to Export a .MXF File
Posted by David Mercer on December 20, 2012 at 12:25 amI’m on FCPX 10.0.6. Quicktime 7 Pro and Compressor 4 also available.
Is there any easy way to export a Prores .mov as XDcam with .MXF wrapper (like was possible in FCP7)?
I deliver via FTP to a news channel in the US and they want .MXF files.
I shoot AVCHD, so no need to import/edit MXF.
Thanks!

December 20, 2012 at 12:40 amYou need either-
https://www.hamburgpromedia.com/products/mxf4mac/MXF-Import-Export-Suite/MXF-Import-Export-Suite.php
or
https://www.calibratedsoftware.com/MXFImport_Mac.asp
Depending on the specs.
I’d check with the client and determine if they’ll accept prores and do the conversion themselves instead.

December 20, 2012 at 1:20 am3rd party software needed even if I’m only exporting in a .MXF wrapper? I don’t need to import or edit .MXF, just export.
$250 to $1000 seems a lot to pay.

December 20, 2012 at 2:15 amPrecisely why you should check in with the client to confirm what they really require. It’s also something you could easily farm out- i.e. ProRes to MXF. Not something you get built in with FCPX or any NLE really…

December 20, 2012 at 3:35 amThanks James for your help.
The client (an international news channel) has requested I submit .MXF files (XDCam HD 1080i50). I upload via FTP from a small village in Guatemala, so farming out is not an option.
However, I just came across Convergent Designs FileConverter for Mac, which rewraps .mov files in a .mxf wrapper. Need to do some testing with the client, but this could be a solution, as I can simply export .mov then rewrap without transcoding, etc.
Fingers crossed.

December 20, 2012 at 10:22 amYou can do it with the new Sony XDCAM “Content-Browser 1.1”. It comes with an export module, which works more or less like you were used to in FCP7, when exporting a sequence to xcdam disc.
But you don´t have to write the mxf on a disc. You can point it to a Harddrive also and then upload it. -

Thanks!
